Yuengling Celebrates 180 Years of Family Brewing Tradition

Fifth-generation owner Dick Yuengling leads “America’s Oldest Brewery” to milestone anniversary, grows regional brewery 15-fold as it approaches two-million-barrel mark

Pottsville, PA, February 23, 2009 – D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. today announced it is celebrating 180 years of continuous family ownership and operation, officially making Yuengling “America’s Oldest Brewery.” Best known for its flagship Amber Lager, as well as a family of products that includes Lagers, Porters and Ales, Yuengling will mark its milestone anniversary with the re-introduction of a traditional seasonal Bock Beer, available this spring.

In its 180th year, Yuengling will also aim to celebrate another milestone: reaching the two-million-barrel production mark.

“Through five generations we have remained unique among breweries, distinguished by our culture, heritage, traditions, and portfolio of brands,” said Richard “Dick” Yuengling, Jr., fifth-generation owner and current D.G. Yuengling and Son, Inc. president. “Reaching this unprecedented milestone can be credited to our loyal consumers, retailers, and wholesalers, and to our employees, who are the cornerstone of our brewery.”

David G. Yuengling founded the company in 1829 in Pottsville, Pa. Dick Yuengling purchased the brewery from his father in 1985, when annual production was just 127,000 barrels. Dick Yuengling expanded the company's product portfolio with Original Black & Tan, and resurrected the historic recipe, Yuengling Traditional Amber Lager, which became the company's flagship brand. Today, Yuengling sustains its family brewing tradition between two brewery locations in Pottsville, Pa. and one in Tampa, Fla., which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. “Yuengling is the legacy of my great-great-grandfather, and I believe he would be proud of its current success. The company remains committed to staying competitive in the marketplace without compromising its heritage,” added Yuengling. Yuengling products are now sold in 12 states from New York to Florida.

The 180-year anniversary will be celebrated by partnering with several iconic American brands, such as C. F. Martin & Co.® Guitars, Louisville Slugger® and Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Co., to provide consumers unique opportunities to interact with the Yuengling brand. This year, Yuengling will also introduce new consumer advertising and increase marketing efforts.
